West Virginia Lottery Finishes Fiscal Year Above Estimates

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia Lottery Director John Musgrave informed lottery commission members today that the West Virginia Lottery ended Fiscal Year 2013 with sales that were 16.7% above estimates, totaling nearly $1.33 billion.

“We are happy that we were able to meet all of our obligations and finish the fiscal year with a surplus of $77.8 million for the state,” Musgrave said. “Our estimates had a decrease built in because of anticipated increased competition from surrounding states and some of that competition has not fully developed yet.”

Limited video lottery totaled $399.2 million, racetrack video lottery totaled $165.7 million, traditional lottery sales (instant and online) totaled $195.6 million, table games totaled $70.3 million and historic resort revenue totaled $7.6 million for fiscal year 2013.

According to Musgrave, the Lottery’s overall transfers to the state included an estimated $155.5 million to education, $52.8 million for senior programs, and $45.8 million for tourism.

Since its inception in 1986, the West Virginia Lottery has generated more than $7.4 billion for state programs.
