Saturday’s $435 Million Powerball Jackpot is Eighth Largest in History

June 8, 2017

Saturday’s Powerball Jackpot is an estimated $435 million, making it the eighth largest jackpot in the game’s 25-year history. The cash value is at $273.1 million.

“We are starting to see sales increase as the Powerball jackpot continues to climb and that is good news, because strong sales mean more money to help support Education, Seniors and Tourism in West Virginia,” Lottery Director Alan Larrick said. “We also are seeing our players win more with the increase in play and have had two West Virginia players win prizes of $50,000 from the Powerball game in just the last two drawings.”

The largest jackpot in Powerball history totaled $1.586 Billion on Jan. 12, of 2016. That jackpot was won by players in California, Florida and Tennessee.

Saturday’s drawing will be the 20th draw in the current draw cycle that started on April 5 of this year. The last Powerball jackpot win happened in Arizona on April 1.

West Virginia has had eight Powerball jackpot winners in its history and West Virginia players have taken home prizes of $1 million or more from the Powerball game on 33 occasions, with the most recent million-dollar-win occurring in May of this year.

“We have traditionally been a lucky state in terms of Powerball jackpot and Match-5 winners per capita, and we would love to see another West Virginia player take home that top prize on Saturday,” Larrick said.

Powerball tickets cost $2, or $3 with the Power Play option that increases prize amounts on all non-jackpot winnings. Tickets can be purchased at any West Virginia Lottery retailer up until 9:59 p.m. on the draw date.

The West Virginia Lottery has produced more than $9 Billion in proceeds to help support Education, Seniors, and Tourism since its inception in 1986.
