Schools And Education

Children benefit from newly constructed schools.

Since 1986, the West Virginia Lottery has invested more than $3.9 billion proceeds to improve the Educational Experience for West Virginia students, ages preschool through college.

These proceeds have allowed for new school construction and/or renovations through the State School Building Authority, placed and upgraded technology in classrooms, and support Higher Education and Community and Technical College bonds across the state through the West Virginia Department of Education.

West Virginia’s high school seniors that are entering college or university across the state benefit from Lottery dollars through the PROMISE Scholarship Fund.

In FY 2024, approximately $29 million was directed from the Limited Video Lottery Revenue to the PROMISE program reward for West Virginia’s best and brightest students with the opportunity to attend an in-state college or university. Since 2002, the Lottery has provided nearly $879 million to the PROMISE Scholarship Program and in turn given 72,796 of West Virginian students a college education.

Senior Citizens

Seniors have a place to receive physical therapy at their local senior centers.

Since 1986, the West Virginia Lottery has generated nearly $1.7 billion in proceeds that have helped the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services, meeting the nutritional, health, long-term care needs, and improving their quality of life.

Lottery dollars are used to help provide more than two million meals annually at county nutrition sites and homes throughout the state, as well as funding property tax credit, senior centers, transportation needs, care giving, and matching Medicaid funding for Senior Services.

Tourism and State Parks

Families can enjoy nature at West Virginia State parks.

Since 1986, the West Virginia Lottery have invested nearly $1.5 billion into the State’s tourism-related areas. West Virginia is known for its scenic and natural beauty with a wide-range of outdoor activities that attract visitors from around the world.

Lottery revenue appropriated from gaming sources is used to help the Division of Tourism, the Division of Natural Resources, and the State Park Improvement Fund.
