Another $1 Million Powerball® Ticket Sold in West Virginia

5/21/2014

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A Powerball® ticket that matched five numbers for the Saturday, May 17, 2014 drawing that is worth $1 million dollars was sold in Weirton and has not yet been claimed according to West Virginia Lottery Director John Musgrave.

The winning numbers for the May 17, 2014 drawing were 23-32-39-47-49 and the Powerball was 22. There were no jackpot winners and the Weirton ticket was one of four to match five across the country for Saturday’s drawing.

This most recent ticket is the 10th ticket from the Multi-State Lottery games of Powerball® and Mega Millions® to be sold in West Virginia this calendar year worth $1 million or more. That figure is a record for the state that eclipses the previous high of five that was set just last year.

“We have always considered ourselves one of the luckiest states due to the number of Powerball® jackpot winners we have produced in our history and now we are on a remarkable streak of million-dollar wins,” Musgrave said. “We are in the midst of a record-setting year for creating millionaires here in West Virginia. It would be amazing to have 10 in a full year for a state of our size, but to have 10 millionaires before Memorial Day is unheard of. We could not be more excited.”

While odds of winning do not change based on location, the probability of winning a prize of a million or more from these popular games is better in West Virginia than anywhere in the country so far in 2014. With a population of only 1.8 million, West Virginia is producing one million-dollar plus winner per every 185,440 people in the state. In fact, despite being a much smaller state, West Virginia is currently tied with Pennsylvania (population of more than 12.7 million) for fifth out of all jurisdictions with 10 match 5 winners in 2014. California (a population of more than 38.3 million) has had 25, New York (population of 19.6 million) 24, Florida (population of 19.5 million) 21, and Texas (population of more than 26.4 million) 13.

In addition to the Powerball® ticket sold in Weirton for Saturday’s drawing, the West Virginia Lottery is still waiting on someone to claim another $1 million prize from the February 12, 2014, Powerball® drawing that was sold in Wheeling.

The West Virginia Lottery advises anyone who is in possession of either ticket to sign the back of the ticket and call 304-558-0500 for instructions on how to claim.

Tonight’s Powerball® jackpot is an estimated $114 million. The drawing is conducted every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.
